St Cedd’s School – Council of Governors


Mr Leo Bartle – Chairman

Mr Leo Bartle, age 61, is a former banker with 28 years financial experience.  Leo is a parent whose two children were lucky enough to experience St Cedd’s School for their primary education.  His interests include travel and sport.  In addition to his position of School Governor he has spent 20 years serving the local community as parish councillor and in other charitable roles.


Mr David Thompson – Vice Chairman

Until 2008, David Thompson was the Managing Director of a longstanding local Chelmsford business that had connections with St Cedd’s School, through the Canham  family, back to the time the Charitable Trust was created.  He has a good knowledge of the history and ethos of the school through his brother-in-law and his own two children who are all ex-pupils.


Mrs Sue Allen

Sue Allen trained and qualified as a primary teacher in the early 1970’s, starting her teaching career in Barking and Dagenham.  She spent ten years as a Deputy Head teacher in a large infant school before taking up the first of three Headships in the London Borough of Havering in 1985.  Sue’s second Headship followed in 1989 and the third one in 1995.  She led and managed a small infant (180 pupils) and a large primary school with Nursery (730 pupils) which was the result of an amalgamation.

Sue left Headship in 2004 to take up a role within the Havering Inspection and Advisory Service as Inspector for inclusion, covering all vulnerable groups, eg Higher Achievers, SEN, EAL, Ethnic Minorities. Sue is also an accredited School Improvement Partner for Primary and Special Schools, offering support and advice on all areas of school improvement as well as preparation for Ofsted Inspection.


Mr Malcolm Bryant – Chairman of Finance Committee

Malcolm Bryant qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1974 and then spent 3 years in South Africa with Price Waterhouse, before returning to the UK in 1978.  Following this, Malcolm worked for 30 years in financial services in the City of London and West End, primarily in banking and private-client stock broking, as Finance Director/Head of Finance.

Malcolm has three children who were educated at St Cedd’s School and he joined the Board of Governors in 1997 after his youngest daughter left the school.  Having retired in 2008, Malcolm has been heavily involved with the plans to relocate St Cedd’s School to its New London Road location.


Mrs Jane Dagg

Born 29 November 1956, Jane Dagg married John in 1984.  They have two children who went to St Cedd's School followed by Brentwood School. Jane was brought up in Chelmsford from the age of four.  She has a law degree from the University of Birmingham and she subsequently qualified as a solicitor in 1981.  Jane was a partner in a firm of solicitors in Chelmsford between 1985 and 1992.  She currently works three days per week specialising in all aspects of family law.


Mr Fred Hargreaves

Fred Hargreaves has always been Essex based and attended a primary school in Chelmsford and Felsted School in the 1970’s.  He is a chartered surveyor and has worked with the same property company since graduating from Reading University in 1981.  He currently heads the City Office for BNP Paribas Real Estate and is on the main Advisory Board.  Fred has a BSc (Hons) and MRICS.

He is married and has three daughters, all of whom attended St Cedd’s School between 1994 and 2003.  He has been a Governor since 1997 and has served on the Finance and Premises Committee since 2000.

Fred is a Liveryman with the Worshipful Company of Chartered Surveyors, a Freeman of the City of London and a member of The British Council for Offices.  In his spare time he enjoys sport, including cycling, running, tennis, cricket and skiing and these days, just watching rugby!


Mrs Linda Hall

Linda Hall became a Governor of St Cedd’s School after retiring from Headship, the culmination of a teaching career in maintained and independent schools, both primary and secondary as well as adult education.  She taught music and French and has an Honours Degree in Music.

Linda’s other interests include choral singing and learning Spanish as well as visiting and entertaining her four children and grandchildren.
